Skin Fades, Fades & Tapers

Fades and skin fades are one of the go-to styles in barbershop, it’s the cut worn by everyone from the All Blacks and Premier League players to ollywood celebrities. It's an awesome style that's generally low maintence in between haircuts and really is a universal cut.

If it's your first time in the chair with one of our barbers, every fade starts with a quick chat about how high it should go and how much length to keep on top.

If you have any questions around fade style, whether it's a burst fade, taper fade or low fade we're happy to answer those questions and we're experienced with all styles. A low fade starts just above the ears and keeps things subtle. Mid and high fades start further up for a shorter, sharper look. For something softer, a taper only shortens the hair around the sideburns and neckline.

A Timeless Style That’s Made a Comeback

The skin fade started out as a military cut in the 1940s and 50s, and it’s never really gone away. Since the 1930s, first as Janis Hairdressing, haircuts here have followed the trends, from the long, Beatles-inspired styles of the 60s through to the skin fades and tapers asked for today. The team cuts fades every day, and getting the blend right still comes down to taking the time over it.

Fade and Taper FAQs

What’s the difference between a skin fade and a taper?

A skin fade goes all the way down to bare skin around the sides and back. A taper only shortens the hair at the hairline and leaves more length on the sides.

Low, mid or high fade, which is best?

A low fade is subtle and suits most workplaces. Mid and high fades are shorter and more noticeable. The barbers can suggest a height based on head shape and how the hair grows.

How often does a skin fade need redoing?

Every two to three weeks keeps a skin fade sharp. After that, the blend starts to grow out.
